In Sydney’s inner west, this five-bedroom terrace rolls its sleeves up, borrowing its aesthetic from the area’s industrial past and its thriving cafe culture. The brief included a total renovation for a family of five, extending the rear ground floor, while combining four poky rooms into one open-plan fronting onto the garden. It also included a home office, a master suite and a self-contained flat abutting the rear lane. Waller started with the interior planning and curated the material palette to follow the one language. Referencing the area’s industrial roots, he used exposed brick in the open-plan, framed with steel shelving and steel-frame doors and windows. Soft grey joinery offsets smart black floors, lighting and tiling, while ochre and coffee-hued exposed bricks, leather and timber furniture lend warmth. As the clients are coffee fans, the kitchen incorporates a commercial machine and coffee dump chute.
